3 Low Cost Ways To Meet Agents & Editors

August 19, 2010 by

These days it’s common knowledge that it’s hard to meet an Agent or an editor through an unsolicited mailing. They are more likely to pay attention to a submission coming from someone they have met in person. To that end, writers flock to conferences so they can get some face time with real live agents and editors. And that’s great. I believe writers should get out and network. But those conferences can be pricey. It’s best to combine attending conferences with a few other strategies that are easier on your wallet. Here are 3 you may find useful.

1.) Attend Author Readings

Make a point of keeping track of writers who do work similar to yours. When they’re in the vicinity go hear them read. Sometimes–not all the time–but sometimes the author’s agent and editor will be in the audience. If they aren’t, see if you can steal a few moments with the writer and ask with whom he or she works and whether they have been pleased with the experience. You can either ask for an introduction or contact the people on your own. If you’re going to do the former, first develop a rapport with the writer and stay in touch. They may not feel comfortable referring you to their agent or editor right off the bat, but in time as they get to know you and your work, an introduction may be a possibility.

2.) Attend Classes Offered by Continuing Education Groups Such As The Learning Annex

Agents and editors are in the business of looking for the next hot writer and making a name for themselves in the publishing world. That’s why you’ll often find agents and editors teaching classes related to their work at places such as The Learning Annex, which has locations in New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Chicago, Atlanta and Boston (http://www.learningannex.com). Recent instructors include literary agent Katharine Sands, editor Marcela Landres (formerly of Simon & Schuster) and Vickie M. Stringer, founder and CEO of Triple Crown Publications. The courses can cost as little as $30 or $40 and last about three hours so you have some time to find out if the instructor can help you or point you in the direction of someone who can.

Remember the agent or editor probably has aspiring authors handing them manuscripts all the time, so make sure you stand out from the pack. Have a killer query letter and synopsis (if your book is a novel) or book proposal (for non-fiction works) at the ready. You’ll make a great impression simply because you’re not making them lug a 500-page behemoth home in their briefcase!

3.) Look for Agents and Editors Who Have Their Own Personal Websites

When you come across the name of an agent or editor who may be appropriate for you, Google them to see if they have their own websites with email addresses that may be different from their corporate mailboxes. Some are authors themselves (like literary agent Donald Maass, author of Writing the Breakout Novel) and have books of their own to promote. Email them and, again, try to develop a rapport and get a sense of what they’re working on and what they’re looking for. It’s best to know as specifically as possible before going through the trouble of making a submission. I recently heard about a writer who submitted to an agent looking for African American authors, but in fact the agent was looking for African American authors who wrote urban romance–which was not the writer’s genre at all.

One Last Note: These ideas should get you started and I hope they’ll inspire you to try other creative routes. It does get easier because you will find that as you go to more events and tell more people what you’re doing, the more likely you will be to find the connector that will build the path between you and your future agent or editor.

An Antiaging Product Supplement

August 19, 2010 by

In today’s world you can find an Anti Aging product supplement, which can be very helpful in maintaining health and preventing disease. Supplementing your food with vitamins, herbs, and minerals will increase your life span. An antiaging product supplement can prevent cells from deteriorating which when they do deteriorate, it triggers the aging process where eyesight, reflexes, agility, and digestion can all be affected. Body pain and joint pain is a common factor in the deterioration of cells as well.

As a person in the process of aging, the body lacks many vital macro and micro nutrients. Due to the deficiency of vitamin and minerals a person might have, digestive and abdominal problems can occur and may be misdiagnosed as a serious illness. Using an antiaging product supplement can take care of unnecessary doctor visits. It’s important to remember that using an antiaging product supplement will not win the battle of lost nutrients alone, taking vitamins and ensuring healthy habits have to come into play if you want to see the best results.

There are certain important antiaging product supplements available such as HGH. Also known as the Human growth hormone, it helps in maintaining the immune system and youthful muscle power, as well as strength and vigor. Growth hormone levels deplete remarkably with the advancement of the age, so the regular injection of growth hormone can be given to aging men and women to help restore and sustain their youthfulness.

DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) is a steroid hormone, which is produced in the adrenal gland. It is present in the bloodstream and upper levels in brain tissue, and gradually the DHEA reduces in a person resulting in a loss of stamina and in many cases, sexual vitality. Loss of muscle tissue as well as weight gain are other factors in losing DHEA. Because of this, supplemental DHEA can help bring these losses back to life.

These are just some examples of what using an antiaging product supplement can do for you. The possibilities are endless as people discover antiaging benefits in all sorts of things including herbs and prayer. It all comes down to the beliefs of someone, and their drive to look and feel younger. One of the most important things for a person to do when trying to gain effects from an antiaging product supplement is to couple their supplement with plenty of rest, exercise, and a healthy diet. Doing this not only prolongs your life in itself, but it enhances the benefits you discover with using supplements.

When traveling these days accommodation is not just a place to sleep for the night. There are many types to choose from and South Africa offers a vast range of accommodation options.

One of the most unique places to spend a night is at a ‘game lodge’ which can be anything from a basic ‘rondawel’ (round building with thatch roof) to a superbly appointed luxury suite. A game lodge is generally situated in a wildlife reserve or national park with close proximity to game viewing.

With a little homework you can enjoy exceptional value for money in some of South Africa’s prime game reserves and national parks. Visit Sabi Sand Game Reserve that borders the famous Kruger National Park. This ‘Big 5′ game reserve offers some of the best game viewing available anywhere on the continent and is associated with very expenses luxury lodges. With a little research you’ll find gems like Elephant Plains Game Lodge and Notten’s Bush Camp, both offering great family offers as well as privacy and luxury at affordable rates.

Another amazing experience is found in a KwaZulu Natal game reserve called Phinda. It is one of the most fascinating regions in South Africa combining 7 distinctly different habitats that shelters an abundance of wildlife including Africa’s Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo). The reserve has some of the most exclusive accommodation options, but it also offers an affordable experience not to be missed – a walking safari where you stay in spacious safari tents with ensuite bathrooms (flush w.c. & hot water!). It is one of the best ways to experience Africa and doesn’t break the bank.

Ever stayed on a farm where the cows get milked in the morning and the rooster wakes you up to the smell of freshly baked bread and fresh coffee? South Africa offers exceptional accommodation known as farm stays where you enjoy life on a working farm. It is a great option as part of a road trip or a family holiday. The kids love the outdoors and enjoy the farm lifestyle, be it only for a day or two. It is an affordable way to see South Africa and to experience some local culture and cuisine. These ‘farm stays’ are found all over South Africa from the Drakensberg Mountains to the Great Karoo as well as the popular Garden Route and Winelands of the Western Cape.

Beach accommodation offers anything from relaxed and comfortable to luxury and exclusivity – the choice is yours. A good place to find accommodation close to the beach is renting a beach cottage. South Africa’s coastline offers incredible diversity from remote villages to popular seaside town and city beaches. It is advised to book way in advance as these beach cottages fill up fast especially over the holiday seasons of April & December/January.

The ‘old faithful’ B&B (bed & breakfast) accommodation is still an all time favorite with more and more business travelers making use of this versatile and affordable option. It’s high levels of customer service makes bed and breakfasts an excellent choice. More and more B&B owners cater for the sophisticated traveler that needs a reliable, affordable accommodation option. A new trend in the B&B circles is a ’boutique’ feel with hip decorations and modern furnishings. This trend is blending studio living, boutique hotels and the B&B lifestyle to offer great options for both casual and business travelers.

Nowadays accommodation is more than just a bed and a place to have a meal. It’s about what you feel like and how much you want to pay to experience it. The choice is there, just do a little homework and you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for.

Every country has its own regulation with regards to legal profession. The legal profession in England, New Zealand, Wales Australia and Canada is composed of two different groups which are the Solicitor and the Barrister.

The Solicitors are British lawyers who give legal advice and prepare legal documents and is considered Office Lawyers. Solicitors have served for two years under the management of a practicing Solicitor and meet other demands of the Law Society, which includes educational requirements, and must be admitted to practice. Several common law jurisdictions such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand excluding US call this type of Lawyers as Solicitors. They are involved in commercial work relating to business such as dealing with commercial transactions, corporate matters, land, share, other property dealings and also litigation.

The Barristers on the other hand are the Courtroom Lawyers who speak in the higher courts of law and who are reserved by Solicitors to advocate in a legal hearing or to render a legal opinion. Barristers are the lawyers who practice out of an office and are often referred to as Chambers. They provide opinions to Solicitors on difficult points of law and appear on court. But Barristers must pass the bar final exams and be admitted to “plead at the bar”, meaning they have been called to the bar and is allowed to appear in court to argue a client’s case. It is required in England that the Barrister has to be taken on by a practicing Barrister for a one-year pupilage which is same as internship. It allows the new Barrister to observe and assist his master in the execution and learn from the experience. The Barristers are easily recognized by their robe and wig which is referred to as the working garb.

A lot of people managed to sell their own home quickly. Here are some tips that might help:

Make sure you have every legal issues covered before you even think about handing your house over. Does your state law require you to give property disclosures to potential buyers? It’s always a good idea to invest in a good attorney to help you.

An attorney also come in handy for helping you make the contract form. Selling your own home requires a contract that would both protect you and the buyer – think about the buyer deposit and the local estate laws.

The large amount of potential buyers coming to your house should not convince you that everyone can finance for a house. If you’re selling a house on your own, more buyers will come in hope of a more flexible negotiation – check them all. Ask if they’re able to buy your house immediately, or do they need to sell their own house first.

Cleaning and preparing your house for home showings is only a part of your effort. Some potential buyers love to do drive-bys, and rely on that first impression. Make sure your lawn and the front part of your house is well maintained. If your curb appeal is low, clients are reluctant to see what’s inside. These tips on selling your own home came from people who managed to sell their house successfully. There’s a lot to consider before you take every next step, so take your time. And remember, it’s useless to do the selling on your own if the revenue taken from not hiring an agent is spent heavily on fixing your own mistakes!

What Is A Rain Water Tank?

June 28, 2010 by

It seems as though sometimes we get way too much rain and then all of a sudden it stops coming down and we do not have enough. A solution to this inequity is the use of Water Tanks Adelaide. With these tanks, one can collect rain and stored it for later use.

In the UK, these tanks are called water butts and in North America they are also referred to as rain barrels. Whatever you choose to call them, they are great for catching water that can be used later. Most of these tanks are above ground but in-ground ones can also be used, especially in typically arid climates when dry conditions are a given and water will be in short supply.

Types of tanks may be concrete, plastic or galvanized steel as well as stainless steel and fiberglass which are chemical resistant and rust proof. They are found often on the tops of roofs as well as patios, driveways and other areas with waterproof surfaces.

The uses of the collected water vary. Most commonly it is used to irrigate crops. It is also used for everyday household activities like washing the car, flushing the toilet, using the washing machine and watering small gardens and lawns. It may also be used as drinking water. If so, extra attention must be given to the water and the tanks to be certain the water is safe for consumption.

First of all, steps can be taken before the water is collected to help keep it safe. Some tanks include things like screen coverings to prevent dirt, debris, bird droppings and insects from getting inside. Selecting an opaque tank is wise to keep sunlight out and thus reducing the risk of algae growth and an overrun of bacteria. A plastic lining is good to prevent leaks and help maintain high water quality.

It is also imperative that, even if these steps are taken, any water that is drunk is properly filtered. Even thought rain water is pure, it may become contaminated after collection. And while rain does not contain chlorine, air pollutants can affect the water after it is gathered. It is advised not to drink water from rainwater tanks unless there are no other sources of drinkable water.

How do these tanks affect the environment? Well, obviously any water that is collected in a tank is water that will not reach the ground. If there is widespread use of tanks in a certain area, it can impact the amount of water that runs off into rivers and streams. It could cause stagnant ponds and dry riverbeds. However, it can also help prevent sedimentation and erosion as well as pollution. If the water that is collected is put back into the same area, it could very well stabilize the flow of rivers and the quality of pond water.
