Ants are seen the world over, from the hottest deserts to the lush green rainforests. We can find them in our lawns, in our houses, and even in our workplaces. They live in colonies, & in a single colony are over a million other ants. There are several different ant types. Some of the better-known kinds are the fire ants, army ants, driver ants, weaver ants, silver ants, honeypot ants, bulldog ants, & leaf cutter ants. All ant colonies are comprised of three classes of ants, specifically the worker ants, the soldier ants, & the single queen ant.
Ants are one of the most common creatures in the world & are of different types. Regardless of their tiny size they could hurt animals as well as humans.
Ant behavior may be different according to their class. Ants\’ color may vary from black or red to brown & their size range from two to 25mm.
Driver ants & army ants are highly developed ants. Army ants are found in South America and driver ants can be found in Africa. Unlike other ants, they don\’t have permanent nests. Their colonies reproduce by two ways – fission or nuptial flights.
Ants that make their nests in trees by attaching leaves together are known as weaver ants. These creatures first force the leaves together with a bridge of workers and then they sew the leaves by pressing silk producing larvae on the leaves.
Ants with generally have enlarged abdomens are honeypot ants. They usually live in hot, dry places such as Australia, Africa, North America & they can be found in deserts as well. These ants are also considered a great delicacy in some places.
Leaf cutter ants feed only on fungus and live only within their colony. They come in various sized castes to perform several functions that are to be performed in the colony.
Another unique type of ant is the fire ant. These ants have a sac of poison that is filled with piperidine alkaloids.
The Australian bulldog ants are those with only 1 chromosome & these are amongst the biggest & most primitive varieties of ants.
