The idea of taking ‘days off’ while losing weight is a controversial topic. The following is my take on the issue but you can make up your own mind. What is meant by a ‘day off’ on a diet is when you just forget about your diet for that day and eat what you want and have a lazy day.
I personally don’t think these are a good idea and here’s why.
I feel that you will only ever get short term results when you go on a faddy diet so I don’t agree with them. I believe that for real change to occur we have to make life changes this should mean that any weight loss is permanent. Making changes to our lifestyle will therefore mean that there is no need to take so called ‘days off’. If you think about ‘days off’ it means that we are giving ourselves a day free from doing something that we don’t really like because in actual fact we are depriving ourselves of something. Nobody wants to carry on punishing themselves continuously and by doing this you are reinforcing the idea that weight loss must be a punishment. When we make life changes though, it is not about self-punishment but instead about doing things in a more satisfying way.
I’m not saying here that we shouldn’t reward ourselves for reaching our weight loss goals we most certainly should. I do feel that the way you reward yourself should not be with something that you have been trying to give up as this is just confusing for your subconscious. Rewarding an alcoholic for abstaining from alcohol with a bottle of beer would be unheard of so why do the same thing when you lose weight.
Instead we should reward ourselves with positive things we like but aren’t going to damage our health maybe you could go away for the weekend or buy that outfit you wanted instead.
