The real cause of this collapse is deeply embedded in our society, concealed from public scrutiny and responsible for making this crisis not only more probable but ultimately inevitable. It is the singular and sinister phenomenon which I call the Game.

The fact is that the Game has been around a very long time – in different forms, but with the same fundamental effect. As one Game ends, another begins. Its most recent incarnation may be found in the consumption bubble which brought about the economic collapse. If we examine this Game, there is much that we can learn about the rules and the impact which they have on our lives.

It can come as no surprise that the boom years ended in bust – for such is the nature of a capitalist economy. When the bust did come, however, the extent to which it threw our financial institutions into disarray came as a shock to us all.

How that bubble grew is simple, really. Over the last several decades myriad products were foisted upon the public who drifted into a buying trance. As needs gave way to wants, specific wants gave way to addicts buying for the sake of buying. Consumption became rapacious, driven by slick advertising and enabled by easy credit. A population of shopaholics became so habituated to shopping that even when the money ran out last fall, penniless people carrying maxed out credit cards filled the malls coast-to-coast.

The human animal is not essentially a rational one. If we believe a salesperson to be genuine and likable, we will instinctively gravitate towards whatever he is selling whether we want it or not. Salespeople know this, and have honed their skills as manipulators to entrap us into making large and largely unnecessary purchases.

So endemic is the power of manipulation that those who can practice it most effectively have become the most influential people in our society. Theirs is the ability to appeal to us on an emotional level, and consequently we trust them with position and power. These are the “Players”.

One cannot b trained to be a “Player”, it is something to which one is born. Without a natural capability to manipulate others, Players would be left floundering. They all share the common trait of being narcissistic: they are out for themselves, and everyone else is merely incidental.

Narcissists are motivated by a desire to obtain and retain power and authority, and a desire for instant gratification. They are highly ambitious, and lack the kind of conscience which keeps most of us in check. They have no interest in obeying laws or conforming to social norms except where it suits their purposes to do so. For them, the ends justify the means, and what matters is what works.

The narcissist is a predator. Their motivation is power, status, and instant gratification. Lacking conscience, they exist without barriers; they hold no regard for the law or any social norm. They execute their plans without question to the methods and means they employ to achieve their goals.

In the course of their ambition, players tend to crowd out the best and the brightest in society. As the natural enemies of those who are governed by conscience, the Players will aim to circumvent and sublimate the authority of those who might challenge their way of doing business. In order to do this they create a Game which us superficially fair and open, while in actuality the outcome is wholly predetermined such that whatever happens, the Players will emerge the victors.

And they maintain this control through hypnosis.

By hypnosis I do not mean the cheap tricks of magicians and party entertainers, but a deeper, more sinister, and more comprehensive form of brainwashing.

It is this hypnosis which we call The Game. The Players convince us to play by their rules, and we accept this unquestioningly. If only we could shake ourselves free of this perpetual trance we might evade The Game altogether and experience it as nothing more than a distant memory.
