One of the commonly overlooked aspects of SEO is using text format for SEO. By using specific tags and formatting techniques you are essentially highlighting particular pieces of information on your page as the most important and relevant. However, there has been some debate as of late whether or not using text formatting can improve your results and rankings.

Therefore as with everything in the search engine optimization field it’s crucial to stay on top of the latest trends and change your strategies as necessary. What works today in regards to the correct text format for SEO may not work tomorrow. Either way, it’s important to be aware of the theories that are out there and how they may able to affect the positioning of your website and all of its individual pages.

When people talk about using a specific text format for SEO they are referring to ways of highlighting certain material to make it more prominent. This highlighting will literally highlight content visually on a page to actual visitors, but what is really meant is how the search engines view the tags.

When you make a text format for SEO change to your site you are producing a visual effect that people browsing your site will see. But the visual effect is not what’s important, it’s the attached significance of the tags used that adds value. For example, with the h1 title tag you demark the most important information on the page, it’s what your page is all about. By working in a keyword into the H1 tag you are therefore showing that your entire page is directly related to that keyword.

This works similarly for the h2 tag, used to denote a subhead. If you highlight your most important key phrase on a page with the H1 heading, you can then try to target a few additional phrases with your H2′s that appear later on in the content. The heading tags grow less important the higher the number, and generally speaking after H2 or H3 there isn’t much value in using them at all besides for the specific aesthetic differences of your layout.

In addition to these tags, another tag used in text format for SEO changes will affect the actual body of your text. The tag is the strong tag, and it makes a particular piece of text bold. While it produces the same effect as the b tag, it’s actually significantly more important. That’s because the b tag only produces a visual change, while the strong tag also attaches a meaning of strong emphasis.

These are the main ways that you can use text format for SEO within your web pages. As mentioned the world of SEO is always changing and nothing is guaranteed. Many people are already thinking that this highlighting of information is no longer completely effective. However it certainly won’t do anything negative to your positioning, and until it’s completely proven to be ineffective it makes sense to implement whenever possible.
